LUX Autumn 2018

10 Unlike anything I had seen previously on the trip, The Residence Zanzibar boasts thirty- two acres of tropical gardens, fringed by a pristine mile-long beach. Behind its impressive façade and striking first impression, the hotel is the very image of island splendour. Within ten minutes of my arrival, I was relaxing on a luxurious sunbed by the promised infinity pool, a large Zanzabari G&T in hand (which was, of course, much better than what we had at home). The facilities were the epitome of five star, from amazing spa treatments, fine dining, and beach barbeques, to a local-twist on western musical classics; if you were so inclined, you can enjoy freshly caught lobster with old favourites such as Wham, the Beach Boys and Michael Jackson playing in the background. Music is very much at the heart of the hotel, once you’ve stripped away the decadence and picture-postcard views. The hotel bar, offering the very best drinks I’ve tasted in a long time, had a wonderful, inviting atmosphere with a view of the private beach. The guests, an eclectic combination of honeymooners and families, were entertained throughout the evening by live music. There is truly something for everyone at The Residence Zanzibar, regardless of age, sensibilities or taste. When on holiday, away from the stresses of everyday life, the sheer joy of a night under the stars, listening to fine music and enjoying a glass of your favourite tipple ticks all of the boxes. A unique amalgamation of Swahili, Omani, British and Indian influences is clear to see in the hotel’s interior design. With its almost neo-colonial vibe and contemporary-afro flourishes, intermingled with a traditional, clean, and light architectural design, the creatives among you may find no small amount of inspiration throughout The Residence Zanzibar. On my visit, I stayed at a large garden villa with a private pool, outdoor shower, spacious egg bath and lounge. The villas are much larger than you would expect, though, if you were travelling with a family, I would particularly recommend the beach front villas, with their swimming pools on the beach, a few meagre steps from the sea and main restaurant. They are simply perfect
