LUX Autumn 2018

LUXLIFE MAGAZINE | 37 Autumn 2018 A Glimpse of the Renaissance for Dundee’s Denizens Dynasty Scotland Restaurant is an experience for the eyes and the palette. A celebration in refined taste, Dynasty Scotland was recognised in LUXlife ’s Leaders in Luxury programme with the title of Most Outstanding Luxury Dining Experience 2018. Following on from this well-deserved win, we spoke with Founding Director, Usman Malik to find out how he has thrived in the often- challenging luxury market. Dynasty Restaurant was established under the very real need for a true luxury venue in the heart of Dundee. Launching officially as the first five-star, restaurant, tea room and wedding venue in the city, Dynasty is a visual delight and a study of imperial interior design. Taking no small amount of inspiration from 18th century France, Dynasty is the Palace of Versailles - the dream of the Sun King- bought to the City of Discovery. From the intricate gold-leaf relief, and Hellenic busts, to the Doric columns peppered throughout, Dynasty is a revelation, embracing the luxury embellishments with a fervour rarely seen outside of centuries-old stately homes. Usman explains his, perhaps, unusual stylistic choices, “Being a painter and sculptor, I have always been inspired by the Renaissance and adore the work of Michelangelo and Leonardo. That’s how the idea of Dynasty started, the word Dynasty reflects the experience you get in our establishment. One can be intimidated by the overall look but that is not what Dynasty is designed for - Dynasty is all about celebrations and experiencing something extraordinary outside of the realm of the everyday.” In that, Dynasty certainly succeeds – like a wonderlandian escape, guests step over the threshold and down the rabbit hole, into a world defined by exquisite food and elegant surroundings. Moving on, Usman discusses major developments in the luxury food and hospitality industry, “I think people are becoming very much health-conscious and, in that, I certainly agree that health is wealth! Dynasty Scotland always makes sure to use a range of organic vegetables, poultry and fish, locally sourced of course. We also endeavour to use low amounts of sugar and healthy alternatives, such as olive, coconut and sesame oil. Apart from that we always ensure that our brand is on-trend and adapts to changing fashions over time - we always make changes in our interiors, exteriors and even the presentation of food, drinks, crockery and cutlery.” Usman continues, emphasising his role at the restaurant, “all industries need dedication and hard work, however the restaurant industry, in particular, needs attention, love and sacrifices. I am very happy that I am involved with my work full time being a head chef, where I can keep an eye on every minute detail.” Regarding the future of Dynasty, Usman has an eye on the horizon, seeking opportunities for expansion, “We are looking to expand all over Scotland in terms of franchises and flagship outlets. We are also working on offering different services in the future such as a spa, and branching out into luxury jewellery, interior design services and wedding & event planning.” To finish, Usman summarises Dynasty’s future and its place at the very centre of Dundee, “Dundee is an excellent city and it’s becoming more prominent day by day, especially with the opening of V&A museum this year, which will be a natural tourist attraction. We are very much looking forward to welcome and host them as an integral part of Dundee’s hospitality scene.” By all regards, Dynasty Scotland seems to be a jewel in the city’s crown. A must-visit experience for those that want a taste, and glimpse, of the finer things in life.
