Château Masburel was established as a residential chateau with a south-facing vineyard with advantageous benefits of the sun, the soil and the well-drained slopes. Now, that vineyard lies upon a 33.4-hectare estate within Montravel, producing some of the most delicate, rich and aromatic Bergerac wines and grand crus. Château Masburel Winery of the Year 2021 - Aquitaine Nov21689 The Château Masburel was established upon the roots of history and continues that historic legacy every year with each production of seasonal wines. In the beginning, the chateau remained within royal administration, right up until the French Revolutions, when it became recognised as an important winemaking estate and passed from owner to owner to continue the tradition and passion for the vineyard. The current owner, Chris Walker, has been listed as the third British owner of Château Masburel. Together with his partner Irma Lazickiene, they are renovating the chateau, winery, and vineyard to sustain future generations of wine enthusiasts and historians alike. At Château Masburel, the overall philosophy is to introduce everyday folk to the process of winemaking, explaining the details, the love and the precise execution it takes to create a signature bottle of Château Masburel wine. “We aim to bring our guests along on our journey from planting new vines, managing the vineyard, harvesting the grapes, producing the wines and bottling and packaging them. For the past three years, Irma and I have been learning about this process, and it is a pleasure to introduce our experiences to our guests,” explains Chris. The entirety of the estate is vast, listing at 33.4-hectares, overlooking the ridge hills above the Dordogne river. A sight as breathtaking and as delicate as the perfect bottles of wine Château Masburel. From the finest Montravel appellation wines to AOC Bergerac, the estate is under 17.23-hectares of vine with an astounding crop of 75% dedicated to enriched, vibrant and bold red wines. In addition to its historic and delectable red wines, Château Masburel produces dry whites under Montravel appellation and semisweet wine under the Côtes de Montravel appellation, all sold within the chateau, restaurants and wine shops across France as well as online. Allowing not only the French and the locals to enjoy the passion poured from every drop, but Château Masburel wines can be internationally adored as well. With that, the current aim for Château Masburel is to bring the knowledge of Montravel wines towards a grand audience through its online and social media presence, which is set to be the goal for 2022. Another enticing feature that will be utilised in the plan is to bring knowledge towards its customers through its bed and breakfast accommodation. Consisting of four themed ensuite bedrooms, the estate enraptures the romantic and comforting views of the vineyard. The entire experience is dedicated to the craft and practice of winemaking, from the views, discussions, rooms and the day-to-day work witnessed on site. Including but not limited to pruning, tying in the vines, harvesting grapes and preparing the wine itself. At Château Masburel, the vineyard is cared for with deep passion, pride and love, and with that, the estate runs on the philosophy ‘let the terroir express itself in the grapes.’ Chris explains, “The purpose of that in mind means that vines are cultivated with sustainable and reasonable struggle methods, meaning that treatments are only used in the vines when it is a necessity. The result of this is that Château Masburel has its very own ecosystem. The vineyard is home to pheasants, deer, hares, badgers, partridge, bats, butterflies and frogs.” Thus, because of this, Château Masburel has been able to complete its Organic certification with EcoCert for the 2021 harvest – an achievement that has honoured the estate and its products. For Château Masburel, the future is delicious - with new crops on the horizon, and its historical reputation soaking across the globe.
