New Year 2019

William Chan has always had a very different way of thinking when it comes to design. He has built a reputation on the back of ignoring convention and trends, instead focusing on what hasn’t been done before: the new and the interesting. Yet, his style has always been, at its core, practical, embracing the very modern ideal of functional design. Today, though Spacedge Designs, William has created innovative spaces for a plethora of clients, including private residences, commercial showrooms and retails stores. According to William, the company has always thrived through a need to play an important role in the ever-evolving nature of design. This is, after all, an industry that rarely sits still. “William is a firm believer in pushing boundaries to produce unexpected but practical design concepts that are better than the conventional solutions. His out-of-the-box responses to design challenges are always defined by their simplicity and inventiveness. “Projects by Spacedge Designs have been featured in local and international architecture and design publications such as Wallpaper and Sleeper. The accolades received by the firm include the President’s Design Award in 2012 for residential project ‘Wonder Box’. William’s first hospitality project, Hotel Mono, has won numerous international design awards, including the Best in Show of the Hospitality Design Awards Nov18845 2018 (New York), and the Graphite Pencil in the Spatial Design/Hospitality and Workplace interiors category of the D&AD Awards 2018 (London), the only winner in this category. Hotel Mono was also shortlisted in the Hotel category of the INSIDE: World Festival of Interiors 2017.” All in all, there can be no doubt of William’s talent, which has been honed through years of hard-earned experience. During this time, he has flourished through an ability to realise a space’s true potential, creating wholly new experiences for his clients. William takes a moment to discuss how the firm approaches a new project. “Our main frameworks toward creating an engaging architectural environment are having a definitive concept, the shifting and placing of design values, plus making sense of and crafting meaningful amenities in the new space. We have always been keen on exploring undiscovered space and pushing the boundaries to produce ambiences that are artistic, unconventional, and do not conform to type. “We deliberately choose and enjoy using the different angles and inspirations found in globalisation, innovative architecture, regular furniture and everyday life in our design concepts as all these inspire us. Ultimately, we have always strived to ensure that our work can contribute to and shape the users’ quality of life for the better by allowing them to enjoy new immersive experiences and multisensory sensations through our design language.” Style Spacedge : Creating the Future of Design Founded in 1999 in Singapore, Spacedge Designs has become renowned for its innovative approach to interior and architectural design.
