New Year 2023

36 Oct22052 Best Sustainable Hawaiian Coffee Bean Company 2022 At Carta Coffee, if the bean isn’t exceptional, then the coffee won’t be either. But exceptional beans don’t just grow on their own – they need attention and care. Carta Coffee believes that care begins first with the nurturing of the soil, followed by the plants and cherries, and then the beans. One-man band, Scott Burr draws on his passion for farming to craft a supremely delicious cup of 100% Kona coffee. From his farm to your cup. With a distinctive background in farming and viticulture, Scott Burr is able to create coffee that fully embraces the senses, from each layer of flavour to the overall aroma, mouthfeel, and experience. After all, he is seeking to craft coffee for his drinkers that is of the same high calibre that he wants to enjoy himself! Carta Coffee’s beans are harvested from Scott’s mixed-elevation, sloping six-acre Nolyssa Farm in the Kealakekua district of Kona. He also sources beans from select small, sustainably-minded farms from within the town. “I love being on the farm and getting my hands dirty.” Scott was born to work the land, being the third generation of grape growers and winemakers. Growing up, he helped his family to tend to the vineyards and gardens in the agricultural heart of Northern California. It was there that he developed his deep appreciation for the often unpredictable art of farming, and he went on to earn a B.S. in Enology and Food Science from Fresno State University. 20-plus years later, he’d enjoyed a career in advising vineyard owners and wineries around the world on how to make the best wine possible. But it was through his travels to the islands of Hawaii that he fell in love with the region of Kona and its coffee, noting the similarities between grape growing and winemaking, and coffee farming and producing. He formed an appreciation for the nuanced flavour and soft, supple notes of 100% Kona coffee, delighting in the fact that no two batches are the same, just like wine. Years of travel left Scott yearning to plant his feet firmly on the ground and to roll up his sleeves and get his hands in the soil. With its ‘aloha’ spirit and generosity, clear blue waters, and rich agricultural tradition, Kona sung to him. He followed his calling of finding the perfect farm and to bring to life his vision of owning a coffee company that specialises in small-batch 100% Kona coffee. Thus, he found a six-acre overgrown coffee farm overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and after months of careful rehabilitation of the land and coffee trees, Scott completed his first harvest in 2015. The farm was to be named Nolyssa Farm, after his children, Nolan and Alyssa. Scott has finally been able to get back to his roots, doing what he loves most: cultivating and caring for the land and producing exceptional beverages that stimulate every sense with terroir-rich, incredible flavours – the foundation of Carta Coffee.
