Restaurant & Bar Awards 2023

57 | Luxlife Magazine Best Luxury Dessert Shop 2023 - Scotland Nothing beats a sweet treat with a sweet family behind it, and this has never been truer than it has for The Artist Patisserie. Owned and run purely by the Militaru family, The Artist Patisserie combines years of experience with youthful energy in one dessert shop shaped package. Nestled in Helensburgh, Scotland, The Artist Patisserie has captured the hearts of the local community. We take a peek behind the curtain, to see how such a humble dessert shop climbed to the highest tier of confectionary quality. The Artist Patisserie is a dessert shop with a history that’s richer than its black forest gateaux. Its founders, Gina, Julian and Maddie Militaru singlehandedly founded this wonderful little dessert shop, combining their separate talents to cultivate a wonderful shop that’s garnered constant praise since its inception. Additionally, with its grand opening taking place in December of 2020, its perseverance throughout the COVID-19 pandemic has solidified its standing as a family-owned business that will fight to provide the best for its patrons, no matter the circumstance. Though it was a risk to open at such a turbulent time for the hospitality industry, the Militaru family was eager to put their wealth of experience to the test to create something incredible. Originating from Bucharest, Gina Militaru started her career in the Hilton hotel, garnering an acute understanding of how to present luxury in an effective, yet effortless, manner. This was only propelled when she proceeded to work on a multitude of cruise ships, where she had the chance to partner alongside famous French pastry chefs and provide for a wide variety of guests. It wasn’t until 2002 that the Militaru family relocated to the UK, and Maddie enrolled in a college BTEC course to learn the ins and outs of the hospitality industry that her parents were already so adept in. Whilst Maddie was studying, her parents continued to add to their skillset too – when Gina acquired a position as the head pastry chef in Cameron House Hotel, Loch Lomond, Julian assisted as her sous chef. And, when Maddie took a university placement, she was able to also work at Cameron House. As a result, it forged the beginnings of what would come to be the family project we now know as The Artist Patisserie. Now a renowned dessert shop in Helensburgh, The Artist Patisserie has a multitude of aspects to show for its efforts. With its shop offering a selection of both in-store pastries and cakes made to order, there isn’t much that The Artist Patisserie can’t provide. And you can be sure that every sweet treat you receive will be made to absolute perfection. Having been crafted by hands that have played a part in serving some of the best hotels in the UK, each individual delicacy holds a golden quality that’ll blow your expectations out of the water. The cherry on top of the cake has to be the family dynamic that makes up The Artist Patisserie. With such strong familial bonds, tied together with a mutual understanding and love for the world of all things baking, The Artist Patisserie represents something truly special. It shines as an example of what it means to work as a team within your family, and how it can lead to a spectacular outcome. The love that goes into each sweet treat is evident through its taste and presentation, and it’s what really sets The Artist Patisserie apart from the rest. Of course, its customers are who The Artist Patisserie truly wishes to thank the most. The Militaru family knows, with full certainty, that success wouldn’t have been possible without the people supporting them through their opening during the pandemic. It’s thanks to its client base that The Artist Patisserie has been able to prosper. Thanks to a combination of patronage and passion, The Artist Patisserie has risen to the award-winning status it holds today, and we’re excited to see how it’ll continue to flourish in the years to come.
