LUX Spring 2018

62 Grand Gesture Wedding Films is a multi-award winning film company that specialises in making inspirational wedding films that are contemporary, elegant and professionally crafted. We speak to Tara McGregor-Woodhams as we aim to find out about the incredible service that the company offers. Based in Edinburgh, Grand Gesture is a team of professional film makers that love weddings, love delighting the couples that the team films, and love capturing the bride and groom’s day in a very unique, non-obtrusive and contemporary style. Covering all types of religious, non-religious and cultural celebrations, the company’s discrete approach ensures that its films are always natural and spontaneous. Tara outlines the services that the company offer, as well as commenting on the staff which contribute to making the company such a success. “Here at Grand Gesture, our main films are 60 – 90 minutes plus, which is significantly more than our competitors. We always shoot with two camera operators as standard, rising to three on complex shoots. The key to providing the best service is our small team of six professional cameramen and two editors from the TV and film industry. Alongside a discrete approach, we use four cameras and multiple sound recorders to ensure the best coverage possible. Producing the best result, we edit, colour grade and sound mix internally.” Offering services in the luxurious wedding industry, customer service is at the heart of the company’s strategy, as they look to exceed client expectations and make their day memorable, something Tara is keen to point out. “When dealing with clients, we have very high crew operational standards which cover dress code; back-up of footage protocols; code of conduct for religious services; editing standards; correspondence templates and protocols. Before a shoot, we make sure our crews know the logistics of the day inside-out, and we brief our crews to be unobtrusive at all times so the couple and their guests feel relaxed.” “To make sure there is a true understanding of the desired outcome on both sides, we have three meetings with the couple. An initial meeting to discuss how we work, what package would work best etc. Then a venue recce, to 1803LU05 agree on camera positions, as well as building a good relationship with the venue. Finally, a logistics meeting with the couple 4 – 6 weeks before the day to run through timings and music. Lastly, our private Vimeo site allows clients to view their film in production and sign off the final version.” Contributing to the success and reputation of Grand Gesture is its ability to stand out thanks to the quality of its finished films. Alongside this is the side by side nature of the firm’s work, with both sides working hard to get the desired outcome, something Tara is keen to comment on. “At Grand Gesture, we love holding our customers’ hands leading up to their wedding, and our feedback shows us that our clients really value the peace of mind that our approach provides them. “Also, we offer our clients the reassurance we know they value; reassurance that comes from a wealth of technical and creative experience; from being familiar with a large majority of the venues in Scotland; and from giving them all the information they need to feel that the production of their film is in safe hands.” Ensuring that only the best result is produced, the team at Grand Gesture go the extra mile for the customer, making sure that their team is fully trained to the effect that they can deliver excellent quality and adapt to the relevant trends, as Tara explains. “Every member of the team is in a position to deliver a film of the highest standard, as we continually train our crews in new shooting techniques that are non-obtrusive; investing in new technology such as a 4K handheld stedicam to provide seamless and cinematic camera movement, new colour grading plugins or title generators that are on trend.” Ultimately, weddings are a wonderful day but sometimes things may not go to plan. However, in her concluding comments, Tara provides us with an example of just how far the team will go to make it a memorable day. “Unfortunately, extenuating circumstances meant that, in May, a bride was one hour late as her small son was very ill. He cried throughout the ceremony, making it difficult for the celebrant, photographers and us. We worked with the couple to get some playful footage of him at the end of the ceremony, spending extra time in the edit to re-work all the sound recordings to remove the crying. The couple were delighted as the final film flowed perfectly and you would never have known there were any issues on the day.” MakingYourWedding Even More Memorable Tech Contact: Tara McGregor-Woodhams Address: 27 Gillespie Road, Edinburgh EH13 0NW, UK Telephone: (+44) 07771 838 034 Website: www.grandgestureweddingfilms.com
