Spring 2021

16 Made in England: Perfume and Prestige Molton Brown is a luxury fragrance and amenities brand with a rich heritage and modern attitude. It tells us more about its commitment to environmental responsibility – and where it plans to take this in the future. A company that prides itself on being an icon of uniquely British style, Molton Brown has 50 years of experience in delivering excellence. Founded in London on South Molton Street in 1971, it has since then built a reputation for creating iconic fragrances, as seen in its eaux de parfum and toilette, bath, body, hand, and hair care collections. All its products are made in England using the highest quality ingredients and the brand staunchly sticks by this. The quality has earned the company a Royal Warrant from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Furthermore, Molton Brown is committed to maintaining a strict code of ethics when it comes to its products – the brand has never tested on animals and control its own renewable-electricity-led facility in England. This way it can uphold the highest quality standards on their doorstep while promoting local and greener manufacturing. Being based in London has ensured this company can keep up with the times to evolve and grow. The city’s progressive attitude is reflected in the brand’s long-lasting and distinctive fragrances, which are created in collaboration with its eclectic set of perfumers. What started out as a small-scale artisanal company has after years of work become an international fragrance and amenities brand. Its products are sold in their stores and websites, in travel retail, and in exclusive luxury hotels. With over 30 years of experience in the hotel sector, it has a global presence and customer base as well as significant influence in the industry. All Molton Brown products have a very simple through-line of ‘Made in England’ – for a lot of its clients, that is part of the draw. Furthermore, its passion for quality has made its products sought after in the hotels it serves, as the brand’s amenities share the same formulas as its award-winning retail collections. The three hotel collections it offers are developed to suit the character and clientele of each establishment; two of these, Luxury Collections One and Two, include Molton Brown’s most iconic fragrances in the brand's signature bottles or recyclable tubes. Its 1971 Collection is 100% vegan, created as an homage to its founding year and artisanal heritage. These collections all feature bath, body, hand, and hair care products, but also offer luxury accessories to anticipate guests’ every need. Molton Brown also goes beyond amenities, with services tailored to each hotel such as the VIP gifting and turndown collection, while a concierge and room- to-room retail programme gives guests the chance to buy the brand’s beautifully wrapped full size collections directly from the hotel premises. Molton Brown‘s ‘individual first’ ethos allows for enhanced creativity, innovation and appreciation of diversity. With its passionate and dedicated team, it forges strong relationships with clients and end users, keeping abreast of changes in a dynamic world. It also must be remarked that its work towards sustainable business practices is more than skin deep. Its founders’ passion for corporate environmental responsibility has fuelled a determined attitude to forever keep improving this part of its enterprise. A 2018 Sustainable Travel Report from Booking.com that showed that 87% of people wished to travel in a more environmentally friendly way, something it noticed has caused something of an awakening in the hospitality industry. Molton Brown is an 100% vegetarian brand, but it is working towards becoming a fully vegan one by 2022 – a goal that is more than within reach, as 97% of its products are already vegan. It has been Leaping Bunny-approved since 2012, and none of its products contain parabens or microbeads, instead opting for the use of natural ingredients such as olive stones, black peppercorn, and volcanic sand. Its dispensers help reduce the need for single-use plastic, and its packaging complies with the EU’s Green Dot programme. Furthermore, since February 2020, all its hotel packaging has been fully recyclable. It also launched its newest Signature Dispenser in early 2021. Crafted to suit every bathroom aesthetic, installing just one unit will prevent more than 18,250 bottles and 137kg of plastic being sent to landfill every year. * *Based on Molton Brown data of 30ml bottles used annually in a typical 100-room luxury hotel.
