Travel & Tourism Awards 2020

Page 70 LUX Travel and Tourism Awards 2020 Perhaps not one of the more well-known European art movements of the 19th and 20th centuries, the Arts and Crafts Movement still permeates areas of society today. It was largely inspired by the works and ideas of several key figures, including the designer William Morris, the writer John Ruskin, and the architect Augustus Pugin. It began in Britain, with John Ruskin championing the redemptive power of fine art and architecture to inspire people to do good deeds and live a good life. Subsequently, more artists and craftsmen began to realise the power of artisanal work, which resulted in astoundingly beautiful buildings and objects from the last two hundred years. That sentiment still endures to this day, and continues to inspire people from all walks of life, including one Ms Elaine Ellis. Since 1993, Ms Ellis’ vision of Arts & Crafts Tours has been to provide luxurious tours of Britain, Europe, and Scandinavia whilst focusing on the architects and designers of the Arts & Crafts Movement. Built on Ms Ellis’ own extensive knowledge and willingness to connect with seasoned veterans of the industry, clients can experience privileged access to private homes and collections, with exclusive access to public museums and collections. Offering small group scheduled tours of no more than twelve people, guests can enjoy a luxurious week of indulging in visits, dinners, receptions, and lectures around all of the many artists, architects, philosophers, designers, and patrons of the Arts & Crafts Movement. The Arts and Crafts Movement, which began in Britain more than 150 years ago, gave rise to some of the most stunning and architecturally- marvellous creations of the last two centuries. More than that, however, the Arts and Crafts Movement brought back a belief in the transformative power of art to improve society. Helping others understand the history behind one of Europe’s most influential movements is Arts & Crafts Tours. After its award-winning success, we profiled the firm to learn about its fantastic tours.
