perfume

Whether you’re a floral kind of person or prefer something on the more subtle side, everyone has a signature scent that they simply adore. While you may think that spritzing your wrists and rubbing them together is the way to go – spoiler alert, it isn’t – there are a number of easy ways to keep perfume lingering for longer. Smell great all day by using these six hacks to ensure your fragrance lasts as long as possible.

Check the strength

What type of perfume are you buying? Did you know that this impacts on the strength and how long it lasts on the skin?

You’ve likely heard of the below terms before, but here’s what they mean for the longevity of the product:

  • Eau de Toilette – luxury Eau de Toilette, such as Marc Jacobs Daisy, lasts about four hours.
  • Eau de Parfum – including the likes of Diesel Loverdose, this tends to last five to six hours on the skin.
  • Parfum – this can last all day – and if you’re planning on being out all day and can’t top up your fragrance, then a parfum – such as the Armani Stronger With You Absolutely – is for you as they last the longest out of this list.

Using the rest of the tips on this page can help all of these options to last even longer, but it’s a good idea to get a strength that suits your needs.

Apply to your pulse points

Most people just spritz their wrists, but applying it to your pulse points will help your scent last even longer. So, spritz your perfume on the nape of your neck, wrists, elbows and the back of your knees (yes, you read that correctly). This works due to the fact that these areas of your body are naturally warm, therefore activating the scent and releasing it throughout the day.

Spritz onto your hairbrush

Your hair can hold on to the scent of your perfume just as well as your skin, sending out a burst of fragrance whenever you flip it over your shoulder. Spritz some of your perfume on your hairbrush before running it through your locks to get the most of it. Do avoid spraying perfume of any kind directly on to your hair though – unless it is specifically designed for this use – as the alcohol used in it can cause damage.

Match your products

Many luxury perfumes have matching shower gels, body washes and moisturisers. If you adore a scent and want it to last all day, investing in these products is a great idea. You’ll smell incredible from head to toe – and people might well recognise and compliment you on your signature scent.

If your favourite perfume doesn’t have a matching moisturiser, you could always make your own body moisturiser. Simply mix a few drops of your favourite spray into an unscented moisturiser and shake the product well, leaving to sit in a cool area for a couple of days. As the face tends to be more sensitive, we advise using this on your body alone.

Rub petroleum jelly on the area first

It may sound odd, but adding some petroleum jelly – such as vaseline – to the area where you’re applying your perfume. This will act as a balmy bond and hold your fragrance for longer. You can also use this as an unscented moisturiser so it’s well worth having some around the house.

Put it on at the right time

Perfume lasts longer on slightly oily skin. Apply it after a shower and remember to moisturize before spritzing to help the scent stick to your skin. This will ensure it diffuses throughout the day, helping you smell incredible for longer. Remember to spray it on bare skin and avoid rubbing your wrists together as this can cause the perfume to break down, making it fade much quicker than it should.

Regardless of if you’re sticking to your usual scent or trying something new, get the very best out of your choice by using all of the above perfume hacks. You’ll have people desperate to know what scent you’re wearing as it diffuses throughout the day.
