Leading Innovators in Turtle Recovery 2020

Cayman Turtle Centre: Island Wildlife Encounter started being a part of the solution to conserve sea turtles over 50 years ago. We combine education and breeding and releasing turtles by creating a closed ecosystem where turtles can successfully breed. We don’t take any turtles or eggs from nature, releasing over 32,000 turtles since the 1980s. Over the years studies have proved that our conservation initiatives are working. Just recently the genetic results from a DNA study showed that 90% of nesting green turtles in Cayman are descended from our turtles. At the Centre, we offer educational, cultural and entertainment programmes that are impactful and engaging and the over 300,000 visitors each year leave the Centre more likely to practice animal conservation in their corner of the world.
