Katherine Sabbath’s most recent cookbook, Bake My Day, features a stunning cake decorated with Simply Rose Petals freeze-dried edible pansies, whilst USA food personality, Sasha Nary of Sasha Cakes Chicago, has also featured the blooms in her most recent cookbook, plus in the last six months Sarah and Jan’s edible creations have been recognised in Indian Vogue Magazine, Better Homes and Gardens, New Idea, and Women’s Day. “Perhaps my favourite of all, is the inclusion of our rose petals at Magnum Ice Cream’s Pleasure Stores,” laughs Sarah. “To date we have served over 30,000 weddings and been inducted into the Australian Bridal Industry Hall of Fame too!” Most recently of all, however, was the recognition of Simply Rose Petals in the Global Wedding Awards 2023 which earned the company the prestigious title of Wedding Confetti Specialists of the Year 2023 – Australia. Next year marks the 20th anniversary of Sarah Rose Bloom and her mother, Jan Slater, establishing the southern hemisphere’s first rose petal farm. Sarah tells us a little more about how the company came into being. “Mum had already been growing cut flower roses commercially for about 20 years until her brother was tragically killed in a plane crash,” Sarah begins. “She was keen to bring the farm back to its glory days and I had recently returned home from travelling.” The mother/daughter team began growing cut flowers once again, however Sarah was surfing the internet one day when something a little different caught her eye. “I spotted a budding new industry overseas selling rose petals for weddings,” she enthuses. “I was captivated by the stunning shots of brides being showered in beautiful rose petals… so much more romantic than paper confetti!” As the saying goes, ‘from tiny acorns mighty oaks grow’ and it wasn’t long before Jan was researching and trialling rose types to find which petals dried the best, whilst Sarah turned her hand to the packaging and marketing side of things, uncovering her real passion in the process. Now, almost two decades later, Simply Rose Petals works directly with wedding couples, as well as partnering with celebrants, videographers, and other wedding professionals to ensure they can provide their innovative products for any occasion. “By far our most popular product is our rose petal cannon,” elaborates Sarah. “Mum and I invented the world’s first freeze-dried rose petal cannon which creates the most spectacular wedding confetti photos you can imagine. The rose petals shoot up to 12 feet in the air creating a voluminous confetti shower that you simply can’t get with people throwing handfuls.
