Travel & Tourism Awards 2024

Travel & Tourism Awards 2024 | 33 Campsite of the Year 2024 - North Coast Scotland Since 1959, Craigdhu Bettyhill Caravan and Campsite has been providing the facilities touring customers need to pitch their tents and park their caravans, motor homes, campervans, and cars and enjoy a comfortable overnight stay. With over 60 years of history, the site has stood at the heart of the community in Bettyhill for decades and continues to grow and develop to this day. Located on Scotland’s north coast by the Atlantic Ocean, Bettyhill is a charming seaside village where visitors can enjoy trout fishing in lochs, strolling along breathtaking beaches, hiking up hills seeking scenic views, and exploring fascinating historical sites like the Strathnaver Museum. Situated just off the A836, Craigdhu Bettyhill Caravan and Campsite is the perfect place to stay during a visit to Bettyhill and its surrounding areas or to stop off on a long drive across Scotland. Visitors can indulge in a much-needed escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life, with stunning views of the natural highland surroundings and the peace and quiet of the countryside. Craigdhu even offers pitches to rent annually, enabling people to keep their own static van onsite so that they always have a small piece of the Highlands to escape to. When they choose to stay at Craigdhu, visitors experience the comforts of staying in their own accommodation combined with the conveniences of electricity, water, toilets, showers, kitchen and laundry facilities, a chemical waste point, and soon Wi-Fi. For those not bringing their own accommodation, the site offers holiday lets in beautiful static vans, which are double glazed, centrally heated, and fully equipped with a full-size oven, hob, fridge freezer, TV, Alexa, Wi-Fi, electricity, and gas. Established in 1959, Craigdhu is now owned and operated by Mr Reay Mackenzie, the youngest son of the site’s original owners, Mr Donald and Mrs Annie Mackenzie. Born and raised in Bettyhill, he is proud to keep the campsite in existence. Having taken over the business in January 2023, Reay has since been working to expand and develop the site, futureproofing it by making various improvements to its facilities. For example, a new shower block, equipped with seven individual private showers, toilets, and sinks, is currently under construction. Due to be completed by April 2024, this area will also feature a camper’s kitchen with dishwashing facilities, a microwave, a toaster, a kettle, and an exterior cold-water shower to rinse off after a trip to the beach. Plans are also in place to update and rewire the electricity supply, resurface the internal road, and install further hardstanding pitches. Whilst many of these developments are still in the early stages, they are expected to be carried out within the next year. Working alongside Reay is General Manager Caroline Watson, who joined Craigdhu in 2021 after retiring from a successful career in the police force. An extra pair of hands was needed to effectively handle the daily running of the site, and Caroline was available to take on the challenge. Her business acumen and Reay’s extensive knowledge and experience are the perfect combination for the job, making them the best small team to provide a great stay to Bettyhill’s visitors. For its outstanding location and facilities, Craigdhu has received a multitude of positive reviews on TripAdvisor. For example, one guest shares, “Excellent stop over at this little site. The location is great, near two fabulous beaches. The walk to the town shop and bar was great and the locals are so friendly. The site is clean and tidy, and the views are amazing.” As a result, it is no surprise that Craigdhu Bettyhill Caravan and Campsite has been named Campsite of the Year, North Coast Scotland, in the Travel and Tourism Awards 2024. With ambitious plans ahead, Reay and Caroline look towards a bright future, and we wish them the best of luck in all their endeavours.
