With a story as unlikely as it is rewarding, Hellyers Road Distillery’s journey began near the town of Burnie, from which a trail wound up and above it, surrounded by bushes. Explorer and cartographer, Henry Hellyer, was responsible for carving out this bush using little more than a gang of bullock and some basic tools – or so says local legend. The road, named in Hellyer’s honour, is now home to a whisky distillery of the same name. which was founded by a group of dairy farmers who understood that their environment was perfect for sourcing ingredients of quality. Much like Mr Hellyer himself, they too had the patience and tenacity to persevere. Today, Hellyers Road Distillery produces whiskies, vodkas, and liqueurs of great quality, exports to more than 20 countries, and has become Australia’s biggest selling locally crafted whisky, which continues to win significant awards. But it’s not just selling its products that has made Hellyers a household name is Australia – it also offers visitors to its site the chance to experience the distillery for themselves with a fully guided, 40-minute, walking whisky tour. Guests can smell the ingredients, see the latest batch distilling, visit the bond store filled with American oak barrels, and understand everything there is to know about the range of Hellyers Road products and Henry Hellyer himself – the man behind the name. There’s also the opportunity for visitors to pour and wax seal their very own bottle of Hellyers Road, complete with a signed Certificate of Authenticity. Then there’s the Distillery Café where people can sit, take a break, and enjoy the rolling vista of the picturesque Emu Valley. The fully licensed cafe boasts an array of well-priced dishes and is available for afternoon teas as well as private functions. Finally, the visitor centre is the perfect place to stop, shop, and sample some of the exceptional whisky products.
