AKD’s Founder, Angela King, started dancing at the age of three and remembers performing throughout her life. Entering the world of professional cheerleading in 1983, Angela joined the San Francisco 49ers “Gold Rush” cheerleaders and gathered over seven years of experience with them. After this, Angela made her natural progression toward the cheerleading management position. Not only did Angela direct the 49ers cheerleaders for five years, but she also cofounded the NFL Pro Bowl Cheerleaders and coordinated dancers for three west coast NBA teams and one other California NFL team. Being recognized for her 40 year history and contribution as a cheerleader, coach, and uniform designer in professional sports, Angela was honored to be an inductee into the Inaugural Class of the Professional Cheerleaders Hall of Fame, as recognized by the NFL Alumni Association and the National Football Cheerleaders Alumni Organization. With such rich experience behind her, Angela has a deep understanding of the industry and the needs of those within it. However, when it came to what she would wear, Angela believed that cheerleading costumes could be better – which is exactly why she decided to set up AKD. “When I was a cheerleader and dancer, I felt the need for a better costume. As a dancer, my costumes were being made by people who weren’t dancers. They were made by people who weren’t ever a member of a team, let alone a professional dance/cheer team. I knew something needed to change. That’s why I started AKD. Dancers needed costumes made by a dancer; someone who understands their needs. It was important then and is still very important today.” AKD’s in-house production facility and administration staff all share Angela’s vision for being the best option for performers across the USA. In 2008, the AKD brand approached its 20th anniversary and, with that, created its Go Wild! Wear. This became a one-stop-shop for everything we could want and need for our cheerleading performances, especially audition wear.
