Maui boasts world-class surfing and snorkeling spots—whether you hit the beaches, bays, and coves on Maui’s south or west side, you’ll find plenty of places to swim in the water. However, one spot on Maui is often considered the best place for snorkeling. We’re talking about Molokini Crater.

Before you set out to explore Maui’s marine life with a Molokini excursion there are a couple of things to know. This way, you can get the most out of your trip.

There’s No Better Place to See Maui’s Diverse Marine Life

Molokini Crater is just off the coast of Maui. From the west side, you can see the crescent-shaped rocky crater rising out of the water. At first glance, there doesn’t seem to be much to see. The top of the crater is barren but it’s a different story underwater.

The crater was formed around 230,000 years ago, as the result of multiple volcanic eruptions. The unique shape shelters the water inside the crater, creating a calm environment ideal for over 250 species of fish all endemic to Hawaii. The crater also shelters close to 38 types of coral.

If you don’t mind getting up early, in the morning you can often see about 150 ft below the water’s surface. Sometimes, you don’t even need to get into the water to observe marine life.

Did you know from December to April, humpback whales are in the area? You may even be able to catch a glimpse of them while you’re snorkeling. The whales probably aren’t going to enter the crater’s protected waters but you can still see and hear them off in the distance.

Consider Setting an Alarm

We’ve mentioned the water in the crater is often clearest in the morning. Guess what, this isn’t the only reason you may want to get up early. Molokini Crater isn’t a well-kept secret and this means the area can get a little crowded.

If you’re new to snorkeling, clearer water can be an advantage and this means an early morning trip. After about 10 am, winds can pick up and the water isn’t quite as calm or clear. However, there may be a reason to consider an afternoon snorkeling excursion.

Prices are often a little cheaper and you’re probably not going to run into any overbooking issues. Remember, the only way to get to Molokini is by boat and this means dealing with other travelers.

Morning Molokini Excursions Often Come with Breakfast

Sometimes, food is enough to convince you to set an early morning alarm. Most Molokini snorkeling excursions come with a complimentary breakfast. Since you can skip the morning meal at the hotel, you may be able to catch a few more minutes of sleep.

What can you expect for breakfast? The options vary by excursion. Most snorkeling outfits offer fruit, yogurt, and some pastries, along with coffee, water, and juice. Pineapple-guava juice is popular on Maui and is often served with breakfast.

If you take an afternoon excursion to Molokini, you may be able to take part in the after-snorkeling BBQ. Depending on who you book your trip with, the BBQ can be pre-portioned and served on the boat. Others hold a celebratory BBQ on the beach. Check around to see what everyone’s offering before booking your snorkeling trip.

Try to Book with a Makena Outfit

Where you book your Molokini snorkeling expedition often depends on how long you want to spend on the boat. Even though the crater is only around 160 yards from Maui’s coast, it’s not a straight shot. In other words, you can’t launch a boat from just any location.

You’ll find the majority of snorkeling outfits in Maalaea. If you want plenty of options to compare and don’t mind a slightly longer boat ride, head to Maalaea. However, Makena is a little closer. If you’re rushing to beat the crowds, leaving from Maalaea will get you to Molokini about 30 minutes faster.

Before you opt for one departure point over another, think about where you’re staying in Maui. For example, if you’re staying in Lahaina, Makena may not be the best option. The long drive may cancel out any advantages you get from a shorter boat ride.

Dress Appropriately and Bring a Towel

Okay, the entire reason for your boat ride to Molokini is to hop in the water and marvel at the crater’s underwater world. This means wearing your best sundress probably isn’t very practical. You also want to leave your jeans behind.

Grab your swimsuit, don’t worry you can wear a beach coverup or a large T-shirt. While the boat is equipped with bathrooms, they’re not designed to be changing rooms. If you’re planning on stopping at a local café after your snorkeling adventure, keep a change of clothes in the car.

Most snorkeling outfits will tell you to bring a towel. A good idea is to grab two towels. Bring one towel on the boat and leave the other one in your car.

Respect the Environment

Molokini Crater is a protected conservation area. The crater is a Marine Life Conservation District. This means certain restrictions apply. You can snorkel in the crater but don’t touch or harm the marine life or coral reefs. Fines can be as steep as $10,000 and you may even face jail time.

Pay attention to your guide’s instructions since they’re familiar with local restrictions and regulations. If you notice someone touching or breaking off pieces of coral, report the incident immediately.

Respecting the environment also applies to the type of sunscreen that you’re using. While you should wear sunscreen to prevent painful sunburns, the ingredients in them really matter. Look for sunscreen with biodegradable ingredients that won’t harm the coral.

Snorkeling in Molokini Crater is an unforgettable experience and one you’ll want to repeat. Try to leave in the morning, you get the best views, and remember to always have respect for your surroundings.
