4 | LUXlife Magazine 8 Oct22507 Making a Statement Through Interior Design As the Best Home & Abroad Interior Design Studio - South East England, Alexandra Dixon Interiors has an exceptional reputation to uphold. Thankfully for the company, it oozes quality and opulence, creating magical results for homeowners in both the UK and Europe. With over 30 years of experience behind it, the future of Alexandra Dixon Interiors is sure to exceed expectations. Established in 1989 by Alexandra Dixon, Alexandra Dixon Interiors is a luxury interior design studio based in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire that works on projects in both the UK and overseas. The company acts as a one-stop shop for professional and efficient interior design services, with this including initial design and specification to final installation and completion. Furthermore, Alexandra Dixon Interiors boasts an experienced and ambitious team of designers, who, along with Alexandra, have created a service that exudes relaxation and individuality. Customers receive a bespoke service and are provided with a wealth of ideas and advice. Alexandra Dixon Interiors typically attracts clients from the South of England; however, the company has worked on several international projects. For example, Alexandra Dixon Interiors has left its stamp on a boutique hotel in Provence, a newly built super yacht in Italy, and an opulent ski chalet in Chamonix. The company has whatever its clients need – it has the contacts, teams, and knowledge to make visions to come to life, be it builders, electricians, or specialist sound and lighting technicians. The team are integral to the company’s success; they listen to what the clients are looking for. In essence, the client’s aesthetic preferences are more important than the team’s style, and therefore, rather than forcing the client into a particular style, they advocate choices and encourage the clients to trust them. This approach results in a more integrated look and happy customers. The team has grown in tandem with the company – organically – and the majority of the recruits stem from personal recommendations or they have approached the business. In turn, there is an air of enthusiasm, creativity, and innovation. In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic shook the world, causing a great amount of disruption. The pandemic, wrapped up with leaving the European Union, has created several hurdles for Alexandra Dixon Interiors, especially when it comes to acquiring materials and furniture from overseas. To tackle this, the company ensures that its clients are fully informed at the outset as to any potential impact that obtaining stock has on the deadline of the project. Alexandra Dixon Interiors’ passion and adaptability has ensured its survival throughout any challenges that it has faced over the past three decades. Remaining flexible and aware has also opened doors for Alexandra Dixon Interiors’ future. The company currently has an order book of projects that run far into 2023, and it has recently taken on a new designer and project management staff to help with its upcoming work. Success comes naturally to Alexandra Dixon Interiors, who consistently produce quality, luxury, and glamour. Leading Designer Awards 2023 | 5 12 | LUXlife Magazine Creative Storytelling in Design Antrobus Design Collective is a multi-disciplinary interior design firm that specialises in luxury residential and boutique hospitality projects. Founded in 2002 by celebrated designer Alison Antrobus, the company is renowned for its luxury interiors and innovative designs. Popular with Alist celebrities across the Globe, Antrobus Design Collective uses their creative ethos to deliver properties and products unique to each story as told through design. Antrobus Design Collective is our Best Multi-Disciplinary Interior Design Studio, 2023 - Miami. What is a design if not a collaboration of inspirational materials and artefacts that, collectively, paint a picture, evoke an emotion, and tell the story of occupants past and present? Skilful design embodies history, personality, and preference, bringing them together in a unique and harmonious blend. The essence of Antrobus Design Collective is a culmination of Alison’s cultural, personal, and educational experiences. The result is inspirational designs with a global perspective and a culture of inclusivity and collaboration. Alison says, “As with the evolution of Self over time, my outlook, approach and leadership style have evolved and shaped the company through the years. As I evolve and grow, the company evolves and grows and will continue to do so. Growth is limitless if you welcome it.” When asked about what makes Antrobus Design Collective unique, Alison tells us, “I’m told that my USP is that I can hand sketch really well and that I’m a good listener. The irony is that neither of these two qualities requires a college degree. I’d like to think that the ability to draw and the desire to listen are essential qualities for our role as designers. Unfortunately with the growing dependency on technology and social media culture, it doesn’t appear to be the case.” Recently, Alison and the team have been awarded a project to reimagine a famous hotel in Hendersonville, North Carolina. The project, headed up by Miami developer Gregg Covin, will see The Cedars Hotel transformed into an ultra-high-end residential complex. Designed and built in 1914 by trailblazing hotelier Jeannie Bailey, the hotel has become a landmark and currently sits on the National Register of Historic Places. The plan for a 130-unit condo will incorporate the original hotel into a fullservice property combining residential property and hospitality. Alison states, “Our design philosophy relies on being inspired by the story, whether that’s a personal story, geography, history, or simply the personality of a client. This is an exciting project for us and we won’t have to look far for that inspiration. There’s a rich and layered history attached to the existing building and its majestic surroundings.” So how does Alison plan to maintain Antrobus Design Collective’s place at the forefront of interior design? She explains, “Creating space for curiosity amongst the team is critical. Fresh ideas are what give us an edge in our industry. That’s why it’s important to expose our designers to various trade shows, both locally and around the world. I encourage field trips to museums and design lectures as well as constant collaboration to pool our ideas. The next five years could evolve in so many different creative directions for us. Let’s see where our curiosity and collaboration take us!” To find out more or see more inspirational designs, please visit the Antrobus Design Collective website. 8 | LUXlife Magazine 22 | LUXlife Magazine Ship Ahoy! Leading architectural firm, GEM specialises in cruise ship design and production management. Having recently been recognised as Best Cruise Ship Design Company 2023, the firm’s Project Manager, Giacomo Erasmo Mortola tells us a little more about life within the naval industry. GEM was established by its namesake, Giacomo Erasmo Mortola in 1985 and today it is still run by him alongside his son, Lorenzo, a naval architect and Chartered Engineer. Over the last 40 years, GEM has played a major role in the cruise ship industry, both as the head architect and interior designer, and the firm can count among its clients some of the biggest leading names in the cruise market such as Silversea, Virgin Voyages, Princess Cruises, P&O, and Cunard for which company has designed a variety of award-winning vessels. GEM works at every level of the design and construction of large premium cruise ships (over 140,000 GT), luxury (40,000 GT), and smaller expedition vessels, assisting the owner from the definition of general arrangement plans in the concept design phase, throughout the signature of the contract with the shipyard and the detailed interior design development. The firm is able to assist its clients in every step of the journey, from architectural master planning to interior and lighting design. During the construction phase, GEM operates as liaison and coordinator between owner, yard, and the subcontractors involved in the production of the ship, and can also coordinate with any other firm involved in the project, assisting them in integrating their project into the overall ship design. “We do everything, from the production of drawings to renderings,” explains Lorenzo. “We also participate in the entire construction phase, with site inspections and participation in mock-ups. Cruise ships are evolving fast and in every direction, from size and technology to passenger expectations meaning innovation is key to GEM in order to keep it at the forefront of the industry and continue to be the leading Italian cruise ship designer and project coordinator. In addition, interior design trends are constantly transforming the way Lorenzo and the team at GEM think and feel about space, therefore combining these two evolving worlds is a challenge the firm faces on a daily basis, both from an architectural and production management point of view. “Staying at the leading edge of cruise ship design is not simply about using up-to-date materials and following the latest colour and design trends,” Lorenzo elaborates. “There’s a tension between preserving a cruise line’s identity and introducing elements of innovation that enhance the passenger experience. You can’t do that with a production-line mentality. Each ship has to be tailor made for the owner and, in the end, for the guests who will experience the ship.” Currently, GEM is involved in several projects, including Silversea Cruises’ two new ultraluxury vessels: Silver Nova, to be delivered in August 2023, and her sister ship Silver Ray, to be delivered in 2024. For these projects, GEM is responsible for the design and co-ordination of the passenger suites, and most of the indoor public venues. Additionally, it is involved with Virgin Voyages’ ships, Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, Resilient Lady, and the latest, Brilliant Lady – to be delivered this year. The firm has worked on the initial master planning phase and has been in charge of the architectural coordination of the project. Recently, for its dedication and hard work, GEM gained recognition in the Leading Designers Awards and was bestowed with the title of Best Cruise Ship Design Company 2023. Long may this impressive voyage continue for Giacomo, Lorenzo and the team! Contact: Lorenzo Mortola Company: GEM Srl Web Address: www.gemsrl.com May23372

Leading Designer Awards 2023 | 9 Summer 2023 | 23 Specialising in producing creative and distinctive solutions in architecture and interior design, Pure Design Studio (Pure Design), based in Vietnam, stands head and shoulders above the rest. We speak to the firm’s Co-Founder and Design Director, Lorenz Lennaerts, as it gains the title of Best Progressive Architecture & Design Firm 2023 – Vietnam, and we discover how his passion for design runs deep. Pure & Simple Pure Design also places a huge emphasis on sustainability and the wellbeing of its users. All of the firm’s designs incorporate sustainable practices, energy-efficient solutions, and environmentallyconscious materials, with the team striving to create spaces that promote human wellbeing, occupant comfort, and a positive impact on the environment. “All of these unique qualities combine to create our USP, setting us apart from others in the industry,” Lorenz tells us. “They enable us to deliver exceptional design experiences and spaces that inspire, engage, and leave a lasting impact on the people who inhabit them.” Recently, Pure Design won an LIV Hospitality Design Award for its resort design creation, the Avana Retreat. Set on a mountainside in northern Vietnam, the Avana Retreat offers 36 bungalows, suites, and pool villas, all of which are seamlessly integrated into the landscape. Each boasts spectacular views of the mountains, valleys, and terraced rice fields, and the retreat’s secluded location ensures ultimate privacy while its 15-hectare area gives plenty of space to roam, including a waterfall in the centre. The inspiration behind the luxury villa’s architecture design stems from the local farmhouses and the ethnic building methods and details, including hand-built earth walls that reproduce the look and feel of Hmong’s houses, and help the villa cool in the summer and warm in the winter. This comes alongside the natural thatched roof design that has been adopted to follow the typical traditional stilt house’s architecture of northwestern ethnic groups. A high priority during this project was the use of environmentally-friendly materials and local craftsmanship. Meanwhile, guests can truly enjoy the uninterrupted views of pristine nature from the rice field-shaped infinity pool, alongside the orchid spa running along a murmuring stream, or view the idyllic scene of ethnic Hmong working on the fields. “One of the most significant challenges we may have faced during the design process was the steep topography of the project site and the integration of the natural and cultural elements of the region into the resort,” Lorenz elaborates. “Finding a solution that satisfied everyone’s needs, while ensuring that the design is functional, sustainable, and aesthetically-pleasing was a complex and challenging task.” Even more recently, Pure Design received yet another prestigious accolade in the form of a Leading Designers Award for which it was named Best Progressive Architecture & Design Firm 2023 – Vietnam. Now, as the future beckons, the firm plans to further promote wellness and human-centric design by recognising the importance of designing spaces that prioritise wellbeing. It aims to do this by incorporating more nature-inspired design principles, integrating health and wellness features, and creating environments that enhance occupant comfort, productivity, and happiness. “We also want to expand our global reach and diversify our portfolio by pursuing international projects and collaborating with clients and professionals from diverse cultural backgrounds,” says Lorenz. “This will allow us to exchange ideas, get exposure to different design philosophies, and the opportunity to work on a wide range of project types.” Contact: Lorenz Lennaerts Company: Pure Design Studio Web Address: www.pure-designstudio.com ased in Ho Chi Minh, multidisciplinary architecture and interior design studio, Pure Design Studio initially started as a dynamic and forward-thinking concept and has since expanded into a comprehensive firm offering a wide range of residential architecture and interior design services. With a keen sense and eye for style and details, Lorenz is the key force behind all design projects from inception to realising conceptual work with flawless finish. Known for his tenacious spirit and determination, Lorenz has helped many clients achieve the project of their dreams through his ability to articulate and deliver something truly special. “At Pure Design Studio, we take pride in our unique qualities which serve set us apart and make us unique,” he continues. “For example, we strive to create innovative and imaginative solutions that stand out from the crowd. Leading Designer Awards 2023 | 11 26 | LUXlife Magazine Distinctive Design Visionary Design Partners Helsinki Ltd (Visionary Design) is a full-service design company that specialises in commercial interior design and architecture, with a focus on the hospitality industry. We find out more from the firm’s Founder, Jaana Ekman as she celebrates success in being named Best Full-Service Design Company 2023 – Helsinki. Founded in 2012, Visionary Design Partners Helsinki Inc offers design services from conception through to completion, specialising in creating cutting-edge spaces for commercial environments. Its constant efforts to set standards for exceptional, bold, and visionary interior design have led to the firm becoming renowned for its meticulous attention to detail and exceptional customer service. “We believe in the strength of ideas and the power of relationships,” explains Designer and Partner, Jaana Ekman. “We partner only with some of the most forward-thinking and reliable suppliers and operators in the business. Our skills and longtime experience in planning, sourcing, and purchasing, supported by our project management, are as important to the execution of our projects as our creative vision.” But in such a competitive industry, what gives Visionary Design the edge? What is it that makes it stand tall amongst its competitors? Jaana tells us that there are very few companies like Visionary Design and that the firm’s focus is firmly on creating holistic design solutions that respond to each client’s commercial objectives and site specific needs. To achieve these objectives successfully requires more than just aesthetic forms, it also needs inspired strategic thinking, a holistic approach to execution, and a fanatical attention to detail. “We love what we do and we’re very good at it,” elaborates Jaana. “We believe design should include an emotional meaning and offer a complete memorable customer experience. “We always approach the design of hospitality venues not just from our clients’ perspective but also from that of their eventual customers. This leads us to create warm and enjoyable places that encourage visitors to stay and to return.” Underpinning this design strategy is Visionary Design’s exceptional level of project management, design quality, and best value of services to its clients throughout all stages of the design and construction process. However, Jaana tells us that of equal value are the testimonials from satisfied clients and the number of ongoing relationships that have built up over the years. “We are proud to say that many of our clients have rehired us, since they understand and appreciate design as a profitable value to their business. We have designed and executed hundreds of restaurants and other commercial projects in the hospitality and leisure industry in the past 10 years. Over that time, we have developed a portfolio that illustrates our considerable experience in designing public spaces as well as selected high-end private residences and office spaces.” In today’s Instagram and social media culture, where every customer has a phone equipped with a camera, it is crucial for restaurants and hotels to offer environments that captivate and shine in all of its photographs. Jaana believes that the role of restaurant design in enhancing the customer experience will continue to gain importance in the future. “Customers are increasingly willing to pay for experiences, and multisensory, immersive restaurant and hotel spaces will play an even more significant role in the future,” she elaborates. “Recycling and biophilic design are already common practices in design agencies. Another emerging trend is the focus on sustainability, environmental issues, and the use of natural materials in construction, which create new meanings and experiences for service users. We approach our work with passion and a great deal of heart. We always give our all in every project we undertake.” Drawing her inspiration from the world around her, Jaana goes on to tell us that above all else, she loves fashion and travelling, with most of her ideas being born during her travels, and especially from awe-inspiring fashion stores where attention has been paid to every detail, such as those found in Italy or Paris. Jaana also enjoys the challenges that come with interior design, which she claims keep her “energised” and push her to strive for better performance every single day. It is this sharp focus that has ensured that not only does Visionary Design maintain its luxury status, but it is also award-worthy too, as proven when the firm clinched the prestigious accolade of Best Full-Service Design Company 2023 – Helsinki in the Leading Designers Awards. Jaana’s ability to willingly step out of her comfort zone on a daily basis is what she believes has allowed her to continuously improve and innovate. Of the future, she states, “I believe that our best years are still ahead in the design business. We have invested a lot of attention to detail in our designs, and our projects stand out for their boldness, emphasizing experiential and multisensory elements. For years, this has been our trademark: meticulous attention to detail. We are known for our exceptionally beautiful and captivating designs. We have developed our own distinctive and recognisable style that resonates with our clients, and we have exciting projects lined up for the future.” Contact: Jaana Ekman Company: Visionary Design Partners Helsinki Ltd Web Address: https://visionarydesign.fi May23583

14 | LUXlife Magazine 16 Feb23076 With a broad focus on many aspects of the designed and built environment, Liam O’Connor Architects has a long track record of designing and delivering cultural monuments and unique houses. The practice dedicates itself to infusing all its works with quality, beauty, and rarity. Liam O’Connor Architects (LOCA) is our Leading Architecture Practice 2023 - UK. We take a look at the firm and some of the many notable examples of its work. Architecture to Remember

Leading Designer Awards 2023 | 15 LUXLIFE MAGAZINE | 17 Spring 2023 Authentic structures such as Liam’s superb classical mansion, built on the Grosvenor Estate in Belgravia, blend seamlessly with our expectations of architecture from the London of the early 1800s. The traditional construction of solid brick and lime mortar features stone window sills, ironwork balconies, and a stone portico inspired by the Tower of the Winds in Athens. The interior of the house, constructed in 1996, is no less spectacular. An elliptical cantilevered staircase with swirling iron balustrades takes centre stage. A stunning rear garden overlooked by a stone loggia and a timber dining pergola gives the house a feel of the Mediterranean. Having the ability to both fulfil a brief and have it appear as an integral part of its surroundings is no small feat. Small wonder that Liam’s vision and foresight are Liam O’Connor, a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, opened his own practice in 1989. Since then Liam O’Connor Architects has designed one-of-akind structures in the UK, France, Belgium, Greece, and Switzerland. Visitors to London will almost certainly have come across examples of Liam’s inspirational work, many of which are landmarks of the capital. Before setting up shop on his own, Liam studied with, amongst others, Léon Krier. The notable architect, polemicist and theoretician best known for his master plan for Poundbury, the extension to the city of Dorchester commissioned by the Prince of Wales. The pair first worked together on Liam’s diploma project for the new Marco Polo airport in Venice back in 1987. Léon, who originates from Luxembourg, recalls how impressed he was by the “competent young English gentlemen”. In particular, by how unaffected he was by the storm of protest that his design provoked in academics and professionals alike. Léon says in the introduction to LOCA company literature: “It is in the context of a largely fraudulent art and building culture that the extraordinary competence, authenticity, internal and external, spatial, and structural consistency, in short, the beauty and outstanding competence of Liam O’Connor’s work can be fully appreciated, judged, and honoured.” Following a challenging path, Liam has never been deterred from his calling. His designs alone prove the validity of his argument for traditional yet sustainable building methods. in high demand. Wonderful examples of this aspect of his design prowess are the two contemporary villas in Regents Park that stand proudly alongside historical terraces designed by John Nash. Liam’s designs combine modern living spaces with classically appealing lines. When talking about the philosophy of his practice, Liam quotes Vitruvius, the Roman architect and engineer, who lived during the 1st century BC: “Firmness, commodity, and delight are still relevant today as guiding forces in the pursuit of architecture. The search for contemporary relevance aligned with these timeless principles is what defines the work of this practice.” LOCA combines architects, urban designers, master planners, project managers, and interior designers and puts a strong focus on the setting, landscape, fine art, and construction details of each unique project whether it be publicly or privately funded. As well as numerous house, apartment, and public building projects, LOCA’s name has become synonymous with elegant memorials in London, across the UK, and abroad. In 2007, at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, HRH Prince Charles unveiled LOCA’s Armed Forces Memorial. The structure takes inspiration from ancient burial mounds known as barrows and the circular Mausoleum of Augustus in Rome. It commemorates all the members of the armed forces who have lost their lives since the end of the Second World War. The memorial is the centrepiece of the park Liam O’Connor, a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, opened his own practice in 1989. Since then Liam O’Connor Architects has designed one-of-a-kind structures in the UK, France, Belgium, Greece, and Switzerland.
